Plexiglas is a thermoplastic and transparent plastic. In scientific terms, it is the synthetic polymer of mehtyl methacrylate, (PMMA). Sold by the trade names Plexiglas, Perspex, Plexiglass, Trespex, etc.
Plexiglas was developed in 1928 and was brought to the market in 1933 by Rohm and Haas Company. In 1936 ICI Acrylics or Lucite International company made the first acrylic sheet called Perspex, from the latin “perspicio”, to look through.

Plexiglas is more transparent than glass. According to the mix, it is stronger and more resistant to the elements and erosion than glass. It doesn't turn yellow because it is made with specific formula (10- Year quality guarantee). Plexiglas is a versatile material that has many residential, commercial, industrial, and professional uses. Major applications fall into such categories as architectural glazing, retail display, lighting, noise reduction, etc.

PMMA is made and classified as a transparent thermoplastic. Extruded acrylic is cheaper, but it cannot be bent or processed and it is suitable for windows and panels. Cast acrylic is usually regarded as a better quality than extruded acrylic, because of its density (1,19 g/cm3). It is more resitant and sensitive to scratching than glass and requires special care to keep its sparkle.

Cleaning products

To get the maximum life out of your plexiglass, never use cleaning solution that contains ammonia to clean your plastic. Both small and large cracks have the potential to render your material useless, however small cracks can often be stopped from spreading by drilling a small hole at the end of the crack. Use only products specifically recommended for cleaning acrylic to avoid cracks.

Acrylic care consists of no more than normal wipe-cleaning to keep it looking new. Chemicals should never be used, and care should be taken to avoid scratches. Use soft or cotton rag and anti-static detergents to clean acrylic surface

How to remove scratches

Removing acrylic scratches can be accomplished by using scratchproof paste/cleaner, depending on the severity of the scratch. Scratchproof paste/cleaner is suitable for acrylic sheets and transparent/coloured objects. ATTENTION: Scratchproof paste/cleaner does not remove grooves.
